BarCamp Sydney is Saturday Only, No Sunday

Initially we were going to have BarCampSydney go over two days, both Saturday and Sunday, but then we thought, gee whiz, that’s quite a lot of time to give up. Sure, we could all talk for days, but give up a whole weekend?

So we thought, let’s just have an action packed Saturday and have another BarCamp in April/May.

So the plan is;

  1. 9am to 4pm, Saturday March 3, 2007 - BarCampSydney
  2. 4pm ish, find a great pub nearby and have some beers. (suggestions for pubs around UTS?)
  3. Go home, think about all the stuff that got thrown around, and see what happens.
  4. Sunday - DON’T COME TO BARCAMP - no one will be there. Just stay at home, do some laundry, walk the kids and think back to how cool Saturday was.

Please help us spread the word of the change.

Curious about the reason why you decided to shorten it? Given the size of the speaker list, and the general theme of “no time left” in semi-organized events like this (SeattleMindCamp, CodeCampOz etc), I’d be surprised if we got through all the proposed content.

FWIW, the last one I attended, most of the good stuff came out in the very early hours of the morning after various all-night coding sessions and rage-fueled technology debates. Would be great to replicate that at some point in the OZ version.

    cheers. :)

Hey Joel, thanks for the question. There were a variety of reasons why we wanted to shorten it.

    1. A full weekend is a lot of time for people.
    2. We didn’t want to lose momentum with our first one. If it goes like crazy right up until the end of the first day, then next time we run one we can go 2 days.
    3. If people want to get together on Sunday, I’m sure we can find a cafe, office, park, pub to keep the conversation going.
    4. We didn’t want to have to pay for the second day if it wasn’t going to be full on all day. Paying sucks, sponsors are great, but we still want to maximise the use.
    5. With all the great content, we thought about having more rooms over one day, then a few rooms over two days.
    6. We might be hung over on Sunday…

Reality is that the organisers have (more than) full time jobs and are trying to make this the best event we can. There’s no perfect way to run it, and I’m sure we’ll learn alot from the first one.

Cheers for the comments and questions. Any ideas on how we can make it better are welcome. Hope to see you on the day, the night and maybe the next day for a continuation scrambled eggs.

    Mick
